The Director of Consular Affairs of the United States Embassy, Brian Fincheltub, denounced that transnational mafias take advantage of Venezuelan migrants desiring to cross the southern border of the United States, without realizing the risks involved.
Fincheltub expressed that in the last year, the number of Venezuelans crossing the border to the United States has increased by 5,000%, going from 115 Venezuelans detained at the southern border in October 2020 to more than 6,500 citizens detained in May 2021.
“Most of the people who decide to cross are being deceived, they tell them that they have to pay a high amount, sometimes up to ten thousand dollars, for a ‘package’ that in the end is not what they expect,” he said exclusively to CCN Radio.
The Director of Consular Affairs warned that the mafias lie to Venezuelans by promising them documents and visas, however, when they arrive in Mexico the reality is different and they must undertake treks of many days until they manage to pass to the United States, only to be detained by the border patrol.
“Every day we are receiving between one hundred and two hundred calls from families in Venezuela who have not been able to locate their relatives (…) There are many people who are missing and there is a lot of despair. One of the efforts that is taking time is to locate the migrants,” he lamented.
