The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, reiterated this Friday during the virtual session of the international body that the region must protect the prerogatives of the legitimate National Assembly of Venezuela as a last vestige of democracy in the country.
Almagro said that it is important that the international community rejects and annuls the decisions of the illegitimate TSJ and CNE, both powers kidnapped by Nicolas Maduro’s regime that attempt against the democratic values of the region.
“In an attempt to hold parliamentary elections this year, the illegitimate Supreme Court, which always acts as an instrument of the regime, has taken actions thwart the holding of free and fair elections that express the will of the people,” the secretary general said during the extraordinary virtual session of the OAS.
The OAS Secretary General said that Nicolás Maduro’s dictatorship is co-opting each of the powers of the Venezuelan state and oppressing political dissidence and Venezuelans, which has also caused the biggest humanitarian crisis in the hemisphere and the biggest migration crisis in the region’s history.
“That is why we denounce the regime for oppressing democratic values, for making democratic values disappear, because what it has built is violence throughout the country, as it has created a space of oppression, torture, death, political prisoners and extrajudicial disappearances,” he said.
In this sense, Almagro reiterated that the struggle to achieve democracy and freedom in Venezuela is not an easy road, however, as Secretary of the OAS he committed himself to fight without rest until a free country is achieved.
