The Government of Brazil announced on Tuesday the extension of recognition to the president in charge of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó and the National Assembly, as the only legitimate figures in the country after Nicolás Maduro’s dictatorship stormed the Federal Legislative Palace and installed a fraudulent Parliament.

“Given the intention of Nicolás Maduro to install a new assembly based on the electoral farce of last December, the Brazilian government reiterates its recognition of the National Assembly legitimately elected in 2015 and its commitment to the democratic forces of Venezuela,” said the Minister of Foreign Relations of Brazil, Ernesto Araujo.

Likewise, the head of Brazil’s diplomacy stressed that “the extension of the current parliamentary mandates is supported by the Venezuelan Constitution and by a legitimate decision of the Supreme Court, and is justified by the lack of respect of Maduro’s regime for election laws, the rule of law, fundamental freedoms and the dignity of its people.”

Finally, the Brazilian Foreign Minister assured that his nation “will continue working with the current legislature and with Juan Guaidó as incumbent president, with a view to holding free and transparent presidential and parliamentary elections soon, to end the usurpation of Maduro and his collusion with orginazed crime.”
