The Government of Uruguay issued a statement on Tuesday where it disregards the legitimacy of the National Assembly installed by Maduro’s dictatorship, and urged that free parliamentary elections be held in Venezuela.

Uruguay does not recognize the legitimacy of the National Assembly installed today in Venezuela because it is the result of an electoral act carried out without the minimum guarantees of transparency, inclusion and verification.
As indicated in the Press Release of December 7th, 2020, Uruguay considers that these elections were not carried out in accordance with democratic principles and values, as there are no guarantees for the free and equal participation of Venezuelan opposition groups. The lack of electoral control by impartial and responsible international organizations is a fundamental factor that has rendered the electoral act by which it is intended to invest the new National Assembly null and void.
The violation of the rule of law by Nicolás Maduro’s dictatorial regime, as well as the lack of separation of powers in Venezuela, which prevents the independent action of justice, reflect a framework of degradation of democratic institutions that worsens with the establishment of a parliamentary body whose membership is illegitimate.
Uruguay reiterates its fervent call for all Venezuelan political and social actors to firmly commit themselves in the search for a democratic, peaceful and consensual institutional solution to the current crisis that the country is experiencing, through free, transparent, and inclusive elections with international verification.
