The U.S. Chargé d’Affaires in Venezuela, James Story, informed that the United States will only recognize the Interim Government presided over by the President in Charge, Juan Guaidó and the democratic parties of Unity.
“Venezuelans should not allow Nicolas Maduro to become stronger with more fraudulent elections,” assured Story during an interview with the digital media, El Nacional.
The US representative stated that the big problem in Venezuela is that Maduro is usurping power illegitimately since the May 2018 elections were fraudulent.
“An agreement must be reached so that a presidential election is held, including, of course, the National Assembly,” he said.
National Emergency Government
The Charge d’Affaires noted that the proposal for a national emergency government to achieve a democratic transition in Venezuela and free and fair elections was still in force.
“We are looking for a transparent process that will lead Venezuela to have the opportunity to choose its leaders,” he said.
Story reiterated that the United States rejected electoral fraud, repression, censorship, drug shortages and lack of democracy. “I have faith in the people of Venezuela. Venezuelans have years, decades already, fighting against something that seems so strong that it will never fall. History tells us that dictatorships always fall,” he said.
“Venezuelans are going to achieve freedom and we are going to continue accompanying them. We are not going to abandon them,” he concluded.
