Michael Kozak, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, denounced on Tuesday that Nicolas Maduro’s dictatorship protects and does illegal business with irregular armed groups inside Venezuela.
“Colombian and religious terrorist organizations within Venezuela are not only allowed to operate in the country, but the illegitimate leader Nicolas Maduro encourages them to stay,” Kozak said in a message on his official Twitter account.
According to a U.S. State Department report, Maduro and his associates are using criminal activity to help maintain their illegitimate control of power by fostering a permissive environment for known terrorist groups, including dissidents from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the National Liberation Army (ELN) and Hezbollah sympathizers.
“The FARC, the ELN benefit from and manage part of the international illegal drug trade from Venezuela. The ELN supervises illegal mining operations and obtains money from the kidnapping of civilians for ransom,” the letter underlines.
