The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) Luis Almagro, affirmed this Monday that the environmental crisis in Venezuela is linked to the policies of Maduro’s regime.
“Oil spills threaten the Caribbean and mercury from gold mining as it can poison communities that consume freshwater fish. Another disastrous effect of the dictatorship,” Almagro warned through his social network accounts.
The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) warned that if strong action is not taken, “it is likely that the regime will continue irreversibly damaging the environment, silencing environmental activists and threatening indigenous communities.”
Furthermore, CSIS insisted that as the Biden administration, the Lima Group, and European allies continue to define their political strategy toward Venezuela, they must ensure that they incorporate the full scale of these environmental concerns into their analysis.
