U.S. Senators Marco Rubio and Ben Cardin called on the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, to reject the electoral farce that Nicolas Maduro regime intends to carry out on December 6th and asked to join forces with the United States to recover democracy in the country.
In a letter addressed to him, Rubio and Cardin showed themselves to be “deeply concerned” about the recent attempts by European countries to deal with the dictatorship in view of the upcoming elections in Venezuela.
“We urge you to support the Venezuelan people in their struggle for a return to democratic order and reject Maduro’s attempts to hold elections in December in a manner that is not transparent, free or fair,” the letter says.
Rubio, a Republican, and Cardin, a Democrat, are respectively the Chairman and the highest ranking member of the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Foreign Relations for the Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civil Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues.
Human Rights Violations
In the letter, the senators denounced the serious economic catastrophe in which the regime has plunged the country and led millions of Venezuelans to flee the country, creating a migration crisis that threatens to destabilize the region, financing terrorist groups with stolen gold and committing serious human rights violations.
“These violations include arresting opposition leaders, imprisoning journalists, turning food into a weapon, torturing opponents and committing extrajudicial executions (…) The UN, the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Venezuela published a report on September 16th that confirmed that the actions of the Maduro regime,” he added.
Rubio and Cardin affirmed that the elections called are a “theft of the voice and basic rights” of the Venezuelan people to choose their leaders.
Regarding the National Electoral Council, the congressmen reiterated that it has violated “the laws by pressing for elections to be held this year, which does not comply with international standards and will only serve to keep Maduro in power.”
“We hope that you will reject and condemn elections that are not free and fair, and that you will support the fundamental right of the Venezuelan people to take control of their own future. We thank you for your attention to this matter.”
“We hope that you will use your position as Secretary General to fully support and assist the Venezuelan people and their right to free and fair elections. Maduro’s objective is to maintain power and continue to use Venezuela as a transit point for illicit crimes to enrich himself and the corrupt people around him,” the Senators wrote.
