Following the consensus agreement presented to the country by 27 opposition parties, including regional and indigenous organizations, which reject the Dec. 6 electoral “farce” called up by the regime, on Monday forces of Unity insisted that another “fraud” will not solve the problems of Venezuelans.
They said the citizens do want to elect, but not under the conditions imposed by Maduro’s regime.
“We want to choose, but these are not choices. In these conditions it is impossible. We Venezuelans cannot go to that electoral theater,” said Nora Bracho, a congresswoman and legislative secretary of Un Nuevo Tiempo.
She also said that the regime goes to these questioned “elections” with an “opposition to its measure” that does not represent the interests of Venezuelans.
“It is a lack of respect. This illegitimate regime is not working for Venezuelans. We are still fighting for truly free elections,” she insisted.
Amelia Belisario, MP for Primero Justicia, regretted that we have to talk about alleged elections and not about the 39 doctors who have died so far in the context of the pandemic because they had no supplies or protective equipment.
“That same regime that is calling for this farce has let our health heroes die. Another electoral fraud is not going to solve the country’s problems. Venezuela does not need another electoral fraud. The regime that does not deal with the problems, turns its back on the country and calls for this fraud,” said Belisario.
For her part, Delsa Solorzano, MP and president of the Encuentro Ciudadano party, stressed that the regime has denied Venezuelans their right to vote. “It is a political fact that they want to impose and we will not bow our heads to the dictatorship.”
Consensus and Unity Agreement
Emilio Graterón, political coordinator of Voluntad Popular, said that the agreement signed by 27 opposition parties was built on consensus and represents a first step towards a process of change in the country.
“It is not an improvised decision or one based on a superficial analysis. It was done with the greatest work of consensus building. It is not only the political parties, but the leaders, who support the agreement,” he said.
He noted that there is no serious organization in the world that says that what the regime is calling for is an election. He stated that the OAS, the Lima Group, the European Union and democratic countries of the world were calling the regime irresponsible for calling on Venezuelans to gather in places to meet the electoral timetable. “It is technically and sanitarily irresponsible,” he added.
For his part, Carlos Prosperi, National Assembly deputy for Acción Democrática, said there is a violation of the Constitution and its Article 226, which establishes that CNE rectors must be appointed by two-thirds of the NA.
“They kidnapped the political organizations, the cards (symbols) representing the parties. Venezuelans will not participate in this farce. The regime does not care about the pandemic that is hitting the Venezuelan people,” he said.
He agreed with his fellow congressmen in calling it a “farce, fraud and theater,” which was called by the Chavista administration. “They violated the powers of the National Assembly to legitimize Maduro in power.”
