The Presidential Commissioner for the United Nations, Miguel Pizarro, regretted that the Canaima National Park appears in the report of the NGO World Heritage Watch as one of the world’s at risk heritage sites due to the policy of the Venezuelan State.
World Heritage Watch is an independent non-governmental organization that promotes the preservation of UNESCO’s World Heritage sites around the world.
The report, which will be sent to UNESCO, warns that Maduro’s regime openly encourages mining activities within the park, ignoring the obligations and measures to protect this territory.
“Our gratitude to the NGO ‘SOS Orinoco’, who do an arduous job to make visible what is happening in the south of our country,” said Pizarro.
The Venezuelan official reported that a tragedy is occurring in the Orinoco that has left disease, exploitation, illegal activities and destruction in one of the most ecologically important areas of Venezuela.
