The presidential commissioner for Human Rights and Attention to Victims, Humberto Prado celebrated this Sunday that the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and its Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression (RELE) condemned the attacks of Maduro’s dictatorship against human rights defenders and journalists.

Prado stressed that in the statement from the IACHR and RELE they warn the regime about the closure of democratic spaces in Venezuela.

In the report, the IACHR urged Maduro’s regime to promote an environment free from hostilities and respect for the fundamental freedoms of human rights defenders and journalists.

Furthermore, he urged the dictatorship to respect the enjoyment of the rights to life, personal integrity, freedom of expression and association, judicial guarantees and judicial protection, contained in various international treaties and human rights instruments.

The IACHR is a principal and autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), whose mandate arises from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has the mandate to promote the observance of human rights in the region and to act as an advisory body to the OAS on this matter. The IACHR is made up of seven independent members who are elected by the OAS General Assembly in a personal capacity, and do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
