The Medical Association of Nueva Esparta State denounced the precariousness of the Dr. Luis Ortega Central Hospital in Porlamar. It warned that since the health center was designated as a sentinel center to attend the Covid-19 pandemic, the facilities have deteriorated even further.
José Antonio Narváez, president of the state’s Medical Association, explained that the crisis at the hospital is so serious that there are not even beds to attend to patients who arrive at the health center suffering from any disease other than coronavirus.
“How does this problem translate? Mortality rates are increasing well above what the World Health Organization indicates,” Narvaez said.
The union representative also warned that absenteeism from work by internists and specialists has reached 50%.
The Central Hospital Dr. Luis Ortega, is also hit by the lack of basic services such as water, electricity, equipment and medical supplies.
Workers and patients at the health center previously reported that due to the lack of air conditioning in the facility, all areas of the hospital are contaminated.
