The ‘Convite’ Civil Association denounced that during the first semester of the year 2021 were registered at least 102 violent deaths of elderly adults.
At least 45% of the deaths were classified as violent, occurring in events attributable to crime, where the main motive was robbery.
The Director of the Convite project, Ms. Francelia Ruiz assured that the situation responds to the crisis in Venezuela and forced migration, where older adults have passed into abandoned old age.
“This is not only the product of loneliness but also of abandonment. This makes them vulnerable and the perpetrators know they are in this situation, so they are not safe even in their own homes,” she declared during the presentation of the report last Friday.
Among the main causes of deaths of older adults in Venezuela are: domestic accidents, immersion and burns, deaths by stabbing, beatings, run-ins and suicides.
67 of the deceased elderly adults were older adult men and 35 were elderly women. The average age of the victims is 68 years.
The association’s study showed that 26.5% of the total of these deaths were concentrated in the Metropolitan Area of Caracas (17) and in the states of Aragua (15) and Lara (10). Six entities concentrated 35% of the violent deaths of this population age group: Zulia, with eight, while Carabobo, Táchira and Trujillo registered six violent deaths in each state, and Bolívar and Anzoátegui, five deaths. In the rest of the states between one and four violent deaths occurred, with the exceptions of Amazonas, Delta Amacuro, Guárico and Sucre, for which no data was obtained.
“These deaths are the direct responsibility of the State, this should not happen. The State must guarantee public policies in which the elderly, and in fact no person, should spend more than 12 hours in a queue,” said Ms. Ruiz.
