The Director and Vice President of the NGO Penal Forum, Gonzalo Himiob, explained that on January 1, 2014 to date there have been 15,160 political arrests throughout Venezuela under the repressive policy of Maduro’s dictatorship.
“Of the 15,160 arrests, 501 political prisoners have been recorded, who are being held in different prisons in the country”, Himiob said during a press conference at its headquarters in Caracas.
He also said that of the 501 political prisoners, there are four who are waiting for the court to finish verifying the requirements set forth by their guarantors and two that are pending for presentation. This translates into a forced disappearance technique, since they have not even been charged or prosecuted.
In this regard, Himiob said that “so far 12 political prisoners have in their hands the release card, but they remain deprived of liberty because the authorities forbids the detention centers to execute the order.”
“Since 2014 to date more than 800 civilians have been presented in military courts”, he added.
Furthermore, the director of the Penal Forum said that 8,904 people are subject to unfair criminal proceedings under precautionary measures. “It is important to note that these people, detained for political reasons, are deprived of liberty awaiting the results of a trial that generally does not advance”, he said.
Gonzalo Himiob, also denounced that last night in the military prison of Ramo Verde several political prisoners were severely beaten. “There was a very violent search by officials of the DGCIM”, he said at the press conference.
“Vasco da Costa was not physically mistreated but he suffered very severe verbal abuse, the officials mocked him for the cancer he suffers and the few medicines he had at his disposal were taken away”, said Himiob.
