The coordinator of Voluntad Popular Internacional, Estefanía Parra Anselmi, assured that “Every Venezuelan extradited is sentenced to death, because he will be in the hands of a cruel dictatorship”, this in reference to the decision of the Council of Ministers of the Spanish Government that ordered the extradition of Ernesto Luis Quintero Méndez, who is innocent and persecuted by Nicolás Maduro’s dictatorship since 2018.
Quintero Méndez requested asylum in Spain after being unjustly accused by the prosecutor of the Venezuelan regime for allegedly committing crimes of fraud in a case involving Brokerage Firms, a persecution initiated by Chavismo in 2010.
The government of Spain has decided to materialize the delivery of Quintero Méndez to Venezuela, disregarding the recommendations of UNHCR, which issued a letter to the Spanish Executive requesting that he not be extradited because there is a systematic violation of human rights in Venezuela.
Voluntad Popular Internacional, in the voice of its coordinator, Estefanía Parra, considers that this is a case never seen before, since the extradition law between Venezuela and Spain establishes that a person should not be extradited if they can be subjected to torture or cruel and inhuman treatment at the destination.
Additionally, the defense of Quintero Méndez filed an appeal for protection, despite this the council of ministers ordered the extradition. “This sets a very negative precedent because it means that any Venezuelan who is requested by the dictatorship will be sent back to Venezuela, despite the risks they would run there.”
Parra Anselmi, expressing her amazement at this case, called for rectification since Spain has always supported the cause of Freedom for Venezuela and for all Venezuelans.
